Introduction to MIG Welding

GMAW, commonly known as MIG welding, is an extremely common and versatile welding process suitable for joining all sorts of thickness of material. From the hobby enthusiast, to someone looking to potentially pursue this as a career, this introduction to MIG welding is an opportunity to get hands-on experience with a low teacher to student ratio to get you on your way.

Our 18-hr MIG Welding Course features a combination of lecture and valuable hands-on practice. This class is designed for beginners (zero experience is required) and also those who need a refresher with the MIG welding process. Upon completion, students will be familiar with safety, equipment, equipment set up and proper welding techniques.

Topics covered in course:

  • Safety for Welders
  • The GMAW process
  • Types of GMAW equipment
  • Assembling a GMAW system
  • Welding steel in the Flat, Horizontal positions
  • Proper techniques for welding “filet”, “lap”, “grove” joints
  • Welding defects; causes, cures and discontinuities
  • Oxy Acetylene cutting torches, applications, safety and practice
  • Techniques for safe handling of grinders and application
  • Understanding and proper reading of a measuring tape
  • Abrasives and metal finishing applications: products and safety
  • Students are encouraged to purchase their own helmet for the course but a standard non-auto darkening helmet is available to use for the duration of the program.

All personal protective clothing needed for the course will be provided within the cost of the program (gloves and welding beanie), welding jackets will be available for student use for the duration of the program.

**Students must attend wearing cotton or denim pants and CSA certified steel toe boots.
